On October 12, 2017, the KSNC hosted a Lake Sturgeon stocking event at the Orr Creek boat launch on the Burntwood River. Youth and elders from York Factory First Nation gathered to release Lake Sturgeon fingerlings (approximately 4 months old) originating from Burntwood River brood stock and reared over the summer at Grand Rapids Fish Hatchery. The intent of the event was to engage community members in sturgeon stewardship activities, and build awareness of the KSNC. Participants had an opportunity to look at and hold the fish and ask questions of the KSNC members and hatchery staff in attendance. After the release, participants gathered for refreshments and further discussion. Events like this not only engage community members in KSNC’s stewardship activities, but also provide the chance to see very small sturgeon, at a size rarely captured in harvesters nets.
